AGM and Winter League
The Blackwood Ladies held their AGM and Winter League Dinner on Wednesday, 6 March. We said thank you and well done to the 2018 Lady Captain - Julie Rainey, for all her good work and a very successful year. We wish her well in her academic studies as she steps down from committee. Our small club of 27 ladies entered these competitions for the first time in 2018 and achieved the following golfing success:
· Challenge Cup team went out to the competition’s eventual runners-up · Just missed qualifying for the Irish Mixed Foursomes · Top 6 finish in the Ulster final of the Australian Spoons · Best Ulster club performance in the all-Ireland final of the Australian Spoons · Best Gross at the Veteran’s Cup · Winner at Knock September Open
We extend a warm welcome to the 2019 Lady Captain - Sandra Longridge, and look forward to the new qualifying season starting in April. Inspired by the 100% ILGU vote for one governing body, we will look to explore with the Blackwood Centre and the Blackwood Men’s Club, how we might work more closely as ‘One Club’. A huge thank you to Maggie Grant for organising and hosting the Ladies’ Winter League Dinner; a fun event with superb food provided by ‘Team 19’ and after dinner entertainment curtesy of Freddie Mercury and friends! Thank you to Maggie and Lynne Creane for organising the fun Winter League event and congratulations to individual winner Heather Maxwell and winning team ‘Charlie’s Angels’.

Do people finally respect Molinari? Ryder Cup hero, Major champion, European Tour Golfer of the Year, Race to Dubai Champion, oh, and now Arnold Palmer Invitational winner thanks to a monster 44-foot putt on the 18th. To say Italian Francesco Molinari has been hot property for the last 12 months would be an understatement, and a two-shot victory at Bay Hill on Sunday only went to confirm his status within world golf. A bogey-free eight-under 64 mirrored Rory McIlroy’s final round in 2018 when the Northern Irishman went on to win the tournament by two-shots and this time it was Molinari’s turn to repeat that feat. 2018 was undoubtedly Molinari’s breakthrough year but ahead of this year’s majors, we want know who you think will rise to the occasion in 2019 and break their major duck; head over to our website to have your say. Enter our poll. Quiz time Who was the last American to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational? For a bonus point, can you name the year? There are no prizes, simply for fun and a well-deserved pat on the back if you get it right.

When you stand on the putting green, it can be easy to drop a couple of balls down and start trying to hole putts from all over the green. Whilst this can help to figure out the pace of the greens that day, it’s not the best use of your time when practicing with the flatstick. |
| Clock drill |
| Ladder drill |
|
We’ve got two drills for you above that will not only make your putting practice challenging, but also give you huge improvements out on the course as you learn to deal with pressure putts. The “Clock Drill” sees you place a number of balls in a circle around the hole, roughly three feet away from the cup to begin with. Go around the “clock”, putting each ball as you would out on the course. Once you’ve holed every ball in a row, you can start again but place the balls a little further away from the hole. However, if you miss a putt at anytime, you're back to the beginning - so don't miss! The “Ladder Drill" is simple but incredibly effective. Place four or five balls in a straight line from the hole, with the first ball being two feet away and increasing the distance with each ball you place. Then, starting with the ball closest to the hole, step up and drain those putts from every distance – your understanding of pace and the break on the greens will increase drastically. But if you do miss one, then back to the beginning yet again. |
