Blackwood Ladies news

Fun Golf & BBQ
Thursday, 11 July

Just a gentle reminder that the Blackwood Ladies are hosting a 9-hole fun golf evening and BBQ on Thursday, 11 July and hope that you can come along with friends or family. The event is open to all members, Ladies and Gents, Blackwood and Mahee and to their friends and families, golfers and non-golfers. The poster below has the details. We hope you will support this night as it was great fun last year.

Please contact Lady Vice Captain, Susan Stockton on 07790359991 to book a team slot or for any further information. Members can form their own teams or submit their names to be teamed up at random; alternatively, for those wishing to just eat, the BBQ will start from 7:00pm onwards at 19.

North Down Business League

Congratulations to Team Captain, Jill Macdonald and the Blackwood Ladies’ squad who have had a great start in this year’s North Down Business League with a strong away win against Kirkistown and an impressive away draw at the tricky Scrabo course. This year, Blackwood is hosting the tournament’s end-of-year dinner and we invite all Blackwood Ladies who take part to come along to the dinner on Friday, 11 October.

The Blackwood Ladies would like to thank Lady Captain, Heather Gibson and the Mahee Ladies for their kindness in inviting us to play in the Mahee Lady Captain’s Day Visitors’ competition and inviting the Blackwood Lady Captain to their Lady Captain’s Dinner after. It was a wonderful day of golf and friendship and a great opportunity to get to know our neighbours.

Congratulations to Blackwood prize-winners Susan Stockton and Maggie Grant and huge thanks to Mahee Ladies for their kindness and generosity. We look forward to returning hospitality at Blackwood Lady Captain’s Day on Saturday, 17 August.

Putting things right

Reading between the lines

One of the hardest things in golf is green reading; it is also something that the majority of golfers never learn how to do properly. So, without giving away all the secrets, here are some handy tips to help keep you on track and hole more putts.

High and low

Prior to reaching the green, take note of the high and low points of the surface and where your ball lies in respect to these. This will help you to build a general picture before reaching your ball.

360 picture

If you’re struggling to read which way your putt breaks from behind the ball, try walking around to the other side of the hole as this can often highlight any breaks you may have missed or reaffirm your original read.

Are you focusing on the wrong thing?

As soon as the ball has left the putter face, we know whether it’s going to be good or not. It’s like a sixth sense, right? But what constitutes a good putt? Many golfers let the final outcome decide this – i.e. whether the ball ends up in the hole or not – but that is arguably well out of our control. So, perhaps it's time to refocus on what we can control?

There are only two things we can really control when it comes to putting. The first is starting the ball on the correct line. Take Tiger Woods for example; the 15-time major winner focuses on a blade of grass he wants the ball to roll over immediately in front of him, which brings the intended target much closer to impact.

The second is getting the ball rolling correctly, which means imparting top spin as quickly as possible after impact rather than having it jumping and skidding in the air.

One way to control our putting is by utilising the technology in TaylorMade’s stunning Spider X putter.

It features an improved Pure Roll insert that has 45-degree grooves to help generate the aforementioned top spin as quickly as possible. The updated insert also produces a better sound and feel at contact, which many of you will love.
