Strike while the iron's hot

Golfers love to bomb shots off the tee with a solid drive, but if your approach shots aren’t up to scratch, you’re going to be missing the green, and giving yourself less of a chance of playing well and lowering your handicap.

It’s a horrible feeling when you catch a bad bounce and your ball sails wayward off the green. But on the other hand, it’s an amazing feeling when you launch it just right and the ball comes to nestle itself down near the flagstick.

Have you ever stopped to think how often you make a green in regulation? You may have some misconceptions about how regularly you’re making if from the fairway directly onto the green.

If you're playing off a handicap of 20 and you make 5 GIR, you're really playing to a handicap of 15.

The data really shows us that hitting it that much closer on our approach shots will be hugely beneficial to your score and overall handicap. If we hit the ball closer with our golf irons in the first place, we’ll be setting ourselves up in a much better position to putt on the green.

Finding the fairway

The secret to having the best approach shot lined up is to make sure you find the fairway off the tee. It can be tempting to always reach for the big stick ahead of teeing off to get the most distance, but you may want to size down a club or two if your target is to set yourself up nicely in the fairway.

The next time you’re wanting to land neatly down the middle, why not take a smaller wood or even a hybrid? Sacrificing a bit of distance in return for greater accuracy can be a real benefit when it comes to setting yourself up with a great second shot.

TaylorMade Qi golf irons

TaylorMade makes some of the best golf irons you can buy, and this year’s release, the Qi, is a truly exceptional golf iron.

Qi stands for ‘Quest for Inertia’, and the higher the inertia rating in your golf irons, the more accurate your shots will be. This is TaylorMade’s most accurate iron to date, and it’s packed with tech to help you succeed on the golf course. The face has been engineered to give you exceptional launch and spin on your strikes, and the redefined leading edge ensures you’ll make excellent contact with the ground on every strike.

The center of gravity also progressively shifts throughout the set to each iron in the set the ideal degree of launch. As you can expect from TaylorMade, the Qi irons have all of the tech without sacrificing on burdening the sleek aesthetic. This club simply looks stunning both resting in your bag and when you’re holding it standing over the ball.

If you’re looking to build up some consistency in your iron play, TaylorMade also has an exceptional high-launch variation available. The Qi HL iron is made from ultralight components with the idea being they’re easier for players who have a slower swing speed to move through the air. This will not only make you feel more comfortable, but increase clubhead speed for more carry distance.

TaylorMade P-Series golf irons

If you’re an adept golfer and you’re looking for new gear that will help you seek out the pin on each green, you’ll get on well with the P-Series irons.

The P770 could well win the award for the best-looking iron on the market. The clubhead has been finely crafted and looks immaculate at every angle. Besides looking fantastic, this iron features a hollow body construction that provides an intimate feel when you strike the ball. TaylorMade has inserted their SpeedFoam Air into the clubhead to make the head less dense and decrease vibrational feedback for a graceful sound and feel.
