Course Improvements

On Monday the excavators arrived and work started on a few key projects scheduled for the winter.

Work started at the right-hand side of the 18th Green, a notoriously wet and waterlogged area of the course. Not ideal especially when it is just off the side of the green. So what do we need when we try to improve this water-logged area?  The obvious thought that comes to mind is drainage, however, that's only part of the solution. There are two more important items before any drainage is installed; Light and Air!

Without light and air, no amount of drainage will improve the growing conditions in that area and we will be left with poor surfaces. Therefore, we have stripped out the hedgerow on the approach to the green up the right-hand side to improve air flow and allow a little more light onto the side of the green.

We will also pull away the bank and tree stumps to stop the water from getting trapped between it and the side of the green. Not only will this improve the wet surroundings of the green but it will also help the green itself. At the rear of the green, we are installing a new path to exit the course.

After this, we move over to the 11th green where we will be scraping out the wet bank and installing a stone carpet to help with the drainage. While we are there we will lay the groundworks for a new tee at the 12th to offer an option to shorten the hole.
